Long tamarisk hedge trimmed to reveal woven hurdle fencing, Graveney

The problem
Out near Graveney, a long tamarisk hedge had grown forward over woven hurdle fencing, hiding most of it. The top had thickened and was uneven along its length.
In this part of the coast hedges take a lot of wind, and tamarisk copes well, but it needs cutting back each year to keep the shape.
What we did
We cut along the whole length in one direction so the top came out level, with clean sides. The hurdle fencing behind was uncovered as the face came back, so we worked carefully close to it.
We kept inside the green growth, as tamarisk is slow to recover from hard cuts. Clippings were cleared as we worked, leaving the ground tidy. We are on the Cutting Hedge, and the finish shows it.
The result
A level top, clean sides and the fencing back in view. A yearly trim will hold it.
Looking after it
People near the creek and the marshes often ask whether their hedge is simply too exposed to look neat. It is not. With a level top, a slightly sloped face and a yearly cut inside the green growth, even a hedge facing the wind off the Swale can look sharp. It is about technique and timing, not about fighting the weather. We are on the Cutting Hedge, and we are happy to talk through what your hedge needs. We offer a 5% pensioner discount and 10% off repeat jobs over 500 pounds.
