Overgrown Cypress Behind a Garage, Ospringe

Every garden has a corner nobody goes to. This one, behind a garage near Ospringe, was a patch of ground where an old cypress had been left to grow, with a pile of broken fence panels and pallets for company.
What was back there
A tall conifer growing hard up against the garage wall, its branches hanging over the roofline, with the lower trunk lost in a stack of old timber and brushwood. Ivy was climbing the brickwork and the whole space was damp and dark.
The work
Getting at it was the first job. Panels and pallets were pulled out of the way to give room to work, then the conifer was cut back from the building in stages. We took the branches that were overhanging the garage roof first, so nothing was resting on the tiles, then reduced the rest to a manageable shape and cut back what had grown across the gap.
We work on the principle that cypress will not regrow from old bare wood, so the cuts were made to keep a live frame and no more. Everything was cleared: the brushwood, the cuttings and the old panels piled against the wall.
Why a corner like this matters
Growth hanging over a roof causes slow damage: moisture on the tiles, and branches working under the edge in a wind. Taking it back is cheaper than the repairs.
